What is Freemasonry? A Design for Life

Imagine a blueprint for living to your fullest potential. Freemasonry provides such a design. As one of the world's oldest fraternities based in Freedom of thoughts, it guides men using the timeless allegories and symbols of stonemasonry. Our aim is not religious dogma nor political agenda, but the cultivation of virtue and the building of character. We are a society of men concerned with moral and spiritual values, striving to be better individuals in every facet of our lives.

The foundation rests on pillars of Brotherly Love (mutual support and community care), Relief (charity and compassion in action), and Truth (the pursuit of knowledge and self-understanding).

The essential qualification is a belief in a Supreme Being, embracing men of integrity from all faiths and backgrounds who seek to live a life of honor.

The Robert Burns Standard: An Observant Tradition

Affiliated with the Grand Lodge of Nevada, Robert Burns Lodge Nuber 59 F∴& A∴M∴ embraces an "Observant" Masonic practice. We are dedicated to experiencing Freemasonry with the depth, solemnity, and philosophical richness intended by its founders. This is not merely a social club; it is a commitment to a more classical, contemplative, and demanding Masonic journey.

Our Lodge lives by the motto: "Dare to be honest and fear no labor." We focus intensely on Masonic education, genuine fellowship, unwavering integrity, profound respect, active charity, and absolute dedication.

A Note on Membership: To preserve the quality and intimacy of our Masonic experience, Robert Burns Lodge adheres to a "Numerus Clausus," strictly limiting membership to 42 dedicated brethren. This ensures every member receives the focus and mentorship required for meaningful growth.

Joining Robert Burns Lodge #59 is a significant undertaking—a deliberate, multi-stage process designed for mutual discernment between the aspirant and the Lodge. It demands patience, sincerity, and unwavering commitment. Expect this journey to unfold over several months, potentially a year or more.

Step 1: The Introduction

Your journey commences by making contact, either personally or through a member. An initial, formal interview with Lodge leadership is essential. This conversation explores your interest, clarifies what Freemasonry (and our Lodge) is and isn't, and begins the process of mutual evaluation.

Step 2: Mutual Acquaintance & Observation

Following a favorable interview, you may be invited to join us for specific Lodge social functions (concordia). This extended period, often lasting several months, allows you to interact with members and experience the Lodge's fellowship firsthand. Your consistent presence and engagement demonstrate your diligence and perseverance.

Step 3: Deepening Understanding & Intent

As you become familiar, you'll receive materials like our Welcome Packet. You will be required to articulate your motivations and understanding in writing. You must also seek out two members of the Lodge who agree to sponsor your petition, signifying their belief in your suitability.

Step 4: Formal Petition & Investigation

Upon submission of your signed petition (with sponsor endorsements and required letters), a formal investigation commences. This respectful inquiry involves discussions with appointed investigators to verify your qualifications and character more deeply.

Step 5: The Brethren's Assent: The Ballot

The findings of the investigation, along with all submitted documents, are presented to the Lodge members. A confidential ballot is then cast. Election requires unanimous approval from the voting brethren, signifying the Lodge's collective acceptance.

Step 6: Initiation: Stepping into the Light

A successful ballot designates you a Postulant, ready for initiation. On the appointed evening—a significant and transformative event—you will experience the solemn ceremony of the Entered Apprentice degree. This marks your official entry into the Fraternity, the beginning of your lifelong journey through the Masonic degrees and quest for further light.
